History of Ultimate Frisbee

 The Sport Ultimate Frisbee, is often just called Ultimate for short, and is a fast paced team sport that blends aspects of soccer, football, and even basketball. What makes Ultimate Frisbee unique is the fact that it played with a flying disc instead of a ball, and the sport its played without any sort of referees, or game officiators. To know a little bit more about how Ultimate came to be, lets quickly look at a brief history of this sport. 

Where did Ultimate Frisbee Start?

  • In 1968: Joel Silver is credited for creating the sport by introducing the idea of Ultimate Frisbee to the Columbia High School student council in Maplewood New Jersey. 
  • In 1972: The First College game was played between Princeton and Rutgers
  • Throughout the 1970s: Ultimate spread across college campuses, and in 1979 the Ultimate Players Association (UPA) was created to set rules and organize matches 
Ultimate Frisbee Worldwide
  • 1974: Creation of the Swedish Frisbee Federation (SFF) is born
  • 1975: Japanese Frisbee Disc Association is born
  • 1976: Australian Frisbee Disc Association is created
  • 1984: The World Flying Disc Federation; the international governing body of disc sports, following rapid growth of Ultimate
Ultimate frisbee is a sport that was created by a High-schooler back in the 1960's and it is now a rapidly growing international sport. Though, Ultimate is not nearly as old as popular sports across the globe, it has shown to pickup great interest and attract new players year after year. Today, Ultimate is estimated to be played by 7 million players, these players spreading out in over 80 countries worldwide.
