7 Reasons Ultimate Frisbee Is the Best Sport You Are Not Playing in College
College life can be overwhelming with academics, internships, and trying to have some sort of social life. Finding time for something fun that keeps you active and connects you with others is not always easy. That is where Ultimate Frisbee comes in. It is the underrated campus sport you probably walk past without realizing how great it actually is. Here is why you should give it a real shot.
1. It is actually affordable
Ultimate requires almost no gear. Most clubs on campus already have everything you need. No cleats? No problem. Just show up with some athletic shoes and energy. At my college, Ultimate is one of the cheapest clubs to participate in.
2. Great cardio without the routine
If you are bored of your regular gym schedule or hate running just to run, Ultimate keeps you moving with purpose. Conditioning is easy in this sport, all you have to do is play.
3. You make friends fast
Ultimate players are usually chill, supportive, and all about building community. Whether you are new on campus or just want to expand your circle, you will find your people here. Every player I have met makes an attempt to make a connection with me, and I love how spirited this community has become.
4. Competition without pressure
You can take it as seriously or as casually as you want. From pickup games on the quad to weekend tournaments, there is space for every level of commitment.
5. No referees means mutual respect
Players call their own fouls and talk it out. It sounds chaotic, but it actually creates a strong sense of accountability and fairness. I personally love this fact about this sport, and it helps set it away from other sports.
6. It fits your schedule
Ultimate is flexible. Most teams have practice a few times a week, and games are usually on weekends. No huge time commitment unless you want it. On our team, the time you commit is valued, and no one is forcing you to be more committed than you want to be.
7. Team and Self Improvement are Equally valued
Ultimate is a team sport, and at the end of the day every player is looking out for each other to improve. Seeing one player improve helps the entire team as a whole. Being less skilled than your teammates is not seen as a bad thing. It's seen as an opportunity to share experiences and skills to help them reach the level they want to achieve.
