The game of Ultimate: A quick critique about discs

Dics, in Ultimate, often called frisbees, can be a hot topic among people who play ultimate. For an outsider, the type of disc that is used in ultimate might not seem to have much importance, but for many competitive players the disc can lead to very strong opinions. For me, I personally would like to critique the numerous different brands of ultimate frisbees that float around the community. If you have read my other blog posts, then you would know the most widely accepted and used disc among the ultimate community is the DiscCraft ultrastar. Unfortunately, I often run into players, and teams using different types of discs. For example, many tournaments I attend sell a disc made by EuroDisc. While at a glance, these discs look identical, playing with these discs is wildly different. These frisbees have different material makeups, which makes the overall feel and play not consistent.

While I understand there will always be competition when it comes to making a disc to play Ultimate, I wish these brands could come up with a way to make these discs more universal. As someone who primarily uses an Ultrastar, made by DiscCraft, using a Eurodisc is a big change. These discs don't even have the same flight pattern, which can lead to missed throws and catches when it comes to gameplay. I am fine with competition among the disc market, and I know that it is necessary, but these different brands should at least have frisbees that fly the same way.
