An Ultimate Interview: Featuring my Teammates

As this is a blog about ultimate, I took the time to interview my teammates about how their views on this sport. Some questions and responses I have asked are below:  How would you describe your relationship / experiences with ultimate?  Player 1: My relationship has grown from playing for fun and seeing the improvement to wanting to win and perfecting the craft. I'm now able to help teach new frisbee members things I've learned since I have started.  Player 2: It's been memorable learning more and more about the game. It's been great meeting new people and players in the Ultimate community, various players with different skill levels and competitiveness to learn from, and using those skills to develop my own game has been a great experience so far.   How would you describe your experience with this team (my college ultimate team)?  Player 1: My experience with this team has been nothing short of fun. From competing in tournaments, to getting to know my tea...

The game of Ultimate: A quick critique about discs

Dics, in Ultimate, often called frisbees, can be a hot topic among people who play ultimate. For an outsider, the type of disc that is used in ultimate might not seem to have much importance, but for many competitive players the disc can lead to very strong opinions. For me, I personally would like to critique the numerous different brands of ultimate frisbees that float around the community. If you have read my other blog posts, then you would know the most widely accepted and used disc among the ultimate community is the DiscCraft ultrastar. Unfortunately, I often run into players, and teams using different types of discs. For example, many tournaments I attend sell a disc made by EuroDisc. While at a glance, these discs look identical, playing with these discs is wildly different. These frisbees have different material makeups, which makes the overall feel and play not consistent. While I understand there will always be competition when it comes to making a disc to play Ultimate, I ...

A Review: Layout Ultimate Frisbee Gloves

When playing the sport of Ultimate, some accessories are sometimes overlooked. One of these being gloves. To a new player, gloves may seem unnecessary to play this sport, but in this quick review I'll be going over why Layout Ultimate has some of the best gloves to offer for this sport.  When I first began playing Ultimate, wearing gloves was something I had never even heard of. I first noticed players wearing gloves at one of my early tournaments my freshman year of college. This tournament was especially cold, and I quickly noticed that catching the frisbee in this weather could leave a little sting on my hand, and playing in this weather made it harder to catch and grip the frisbee. Gloves quickly became a necessity in my Ultimate bag.  After purchasing gloves from Layout Ultimate, I quickly understood the hype. Wearing these gloves kept my hands much warmer, and made it much easier to both throw and catch the frisbee. These gloves are especially unique as they have added g...

At my college, Ultimate is one of the cheapest clubs to participate in.  2. Great cardio without the routine If you are bored of your regular gym schedule or hate running just to run, Ultimate keeps you moving with purpose. Conditioning is easy in this sport, all you have to do is play.  3. You make friends fast Ultimate players are usually chill, supportive, and all about building community. Whe...

The Game of Ultimate: A Quick Rant

Let me get this off my chest real quick: how in the world is “Frisbee” a trademarked word? Seriously, we are out here on college quads, sweating through cheap intramurals, calling it “ultimate frisbee” because that is literally what everyone knows it as, and apparently that is illegal? No one that I know refers to the frisbee as a "disc", but I guess that's what we are supposed to say? The fact that Wham-O, the toy company that made the original plastic disc, somehow has the legal authority to gatekeep an entire sport’s vocabulary is ridiculous. Imagine trying to trademark the word “ball.” Playing soccer, basketball, and baseball would not let that happen. That is the exact energy this situation has. It feels absurd that a single company can try to own a word that has clearly evolved far beyond its original product. I think its definitely time for a change. The best part is that nobody outside of official organizations even cares. Every single person I have ever met cal...
